SPECIAL birthday celebrations were taking place last week as one Central Fife school turned 125.

Kelty Primary youngsters took part in a special domino rally with cereal boxes spelling out the age of the school which were later donated to local foodbanks.

A range of activities were also organised in school to mark the special milestone.

Headteacher Colin Lyle said staff and pupils had enjoyed the occasion.

"It has been two weeks of celebrations – we thought it would be nice to make it special," he explained. "It has been curriculum based with the theme of things like 125 so we had a maths orienteering course set up, the children have been writing 125 word short stories so had a writer's competition and the children have really been getting into it.

"All the classes have decorated their classroom doors and the domino rally was another idea. We were looking at how we can help the local community and we thought if we collected them then that would look really good and we could then donate them.

"We have given some of them to the Cafe Inc in Kelty which has a foodbank every week and then sent the other 300 to Dunfermline Foodbank."

Other activities have included finding about the school and the village over the past 125 years and hearing from former pupils who have told of their experiences.

"Grand parents and great grand parents have been telling us stories and parents who were here for the 100 year celebrations have given us their version of how they celebrated then," added Mr Lyle.
