POLICE in Cowdenbeath have appealed for residents to stop “blighting” public spaces with football-related graffiti.

A number of markings have cropped up around the town recently related to football teams and the police and local community council have now appealed for those carrying out the graffiti to stop.

They have also asked for anyone with knowledge of who is doing it to contact them regarding it.

The community council previously told the Times that the graffiti was harming the town’s image after it was given much-needed financial injections.

There were also fears that the louts would target the empty mural which is in the town’s High Street.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Although it was not reported to police, officers were made aware of [the graffiti] and have been carrying out enquiries into recent graffiti, and are appealing to anyone with information on who might be responsible, or any information to contact local officers.”

A statement from Cowdenbeath Community Council said: “The subject of vandalism in the town was raised at the Community Council meeting on Thursday.

“It feels like no matter where you go within the town, you come across football related stickers/graffiti.

“There are lots of residents who are trying to do their bit to make Cowdenbeath a nice place to live, work and visit.

“This vandalism certainly doesn’t help that cause, and so far - since January - we understand the clean-up costs are into the thousands of pounds, money which could be better spent.

“So please, if you see or hear anything ...contact the police.”
