ONE thousand miles for £1,000, that is the target of Lochgelly’s Don Campbell, who aims to raise cash for charitable causes in Lochgelly and Cardenden in 2021.

The former Powderhall sprinter, coach and Highland Games handicapper, wants to run 20 miles a week in 2021 to raise money.

And he puts a few pounds away himself when he embarks on his runs from his home in Lochgelly, to Wallsgreen Park in Cardenden, the home of Bowhill Highland Games.

The 68 year-old chairman of the Games Committee said: “I like going out for wee runs and living in the north part of Lochgelly I can head across country towards Auchterderran, and then down to Wallsgreen, and it is a journey of four miles.

“I thought that I am not getting any younger and maybe now is the time to take on this challenge and raise £1,000 by running 1,000 miles.

“I have set the target of having it completed before Christmas, which means five runs a week and already I have had several trips to Bowhill!”

Don, who plans to retire from his job in Grangemouth this year, has set the target of raising £1,000 for good causes in the communities of Lochgelly and Cardenden.

“It has been a tough time for everyone so there will be some good causes I can help with this wee personal challenge,” he went on.

“I am putting money aside myself, but the family is aiming to set up a Just Giving page later in the year, so hopefully I can reach the target by early December.”

While Covid-19 saw the Bowhill Highland Games postponed for a year, it should go ahead this September, the Highland Games Handicapping guru is hopeful that the early autumn event will happen.

“The Games programme was badly hit in 2020, but with the vaccine programme now in full swing we hope that by the summer months some meetings will take place this year,” commented Don.

“The Bowhill Games are scheduled for September 12, so we have time on our side, but with the way the pandemic has gone you just don’t know.

“Hopefully by the time we get to mid summer things will look a lot better.”
