MORE than £1,000 was raised for a local community at the weekend as some brave folks began the new year with a chilly competition.

Derek Davidson competed in the Splash 4 Cash competition while raising a huge sum of money for the Benarty community.

After James Fotheringham threw the ball into the icy cold water, Derek and ‘outsider’ competitors set off to see who could retrieve it first and walk away with the all-important trophy and pride.

Sadly for Derek, Woody Macrae from Newburgh managed to get his hands on the ball first to be crowned champion.

Derek said he was raising funds to help people following a difficult year for all.

He said: “Lockdown has made it very difficult on everyone this year especially the kids in our area and the funds go to ensuring special treats are laid on for them during these trying times.

“Well done to everyone who took part and entertained the supporters.”
