PEOPLE over 60 are to be invited to receive the lifeline flu vaccine from today as Glasgow’s health board reaches its target deadline to deliver the shot to the elderly.

The next phase of the vaccine will see all those aged between 60 and 64-years-old sent appointments to be inoculated against the seasonal flu from December 1.

Letters will be sent out in the post from health boards around the country to those eligible.

It comes just 24 hours after NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) reached its target to complete vaccinations for all those over 65-years-old by November 30. The board previously said it was “working hard” to achieve the goal following intervention by the Glasgow Times’s Give Our OAPs a Shot campaign.

However, figures are yet to be released to determine if the target has been met.

The latest data revealed 124,265 people in the age group had already received their flu jab.

Deputy chief medical officer Dr Nicola Steedman said: “Flu is serious in itself, but with Covid-19 also circulating in the community, getting a flu jab is more important than ever.

“For those who may be concerned about going to get the flu vaccine, we can assure you that there will be strict infection and prevention control measures in place at delivery sites to protect you.

“The vaccine is safe, and the best protection we have against flu.

“I’ve had my vaccine already, and would urge all of those who are eligible, including the new group of 60 to 64-year-olds, to get one too.

“We will continue to adapt our approach to any changes that occur throughout flu season, always prioritising those most at risk from flu, as well as seeking to protect the NHS.”
