THE first solo exhibition for Dunfermline-based Kelly-Anne Cairns will take flight at Fire Station Creative next week.

The display, named Butterfly Effect, will feature the artist’s unique style – a mix of traditional oil painting, modern settings and subjects, and engaging brush strokes and colours – which has seen her shortlisted for the Scottish Portrait and BP Portrait Awards.

And Kelly-Anne found art was a respite among the chaos of 2020.

“When I was initially offered a solo exhibition my inspiration was originally ‘Home’,” she explained. “However, during lockdown ‘Home’ took on a whole different meaning – my world shrunk, my vision became blinkered and our house became our everything.

“I wove the butterfly effect concept through my work and also the notion of a butterfly’s metamorphosis, the fragility of the butterfly itself, and the freedom of flight.”

For the majority of her career, Kelly-Anne has focussed on human subjects however, after spending much more time at home this year, her subjects shifted to the beautiful comforts of everyday surroundings.

She began to look at objects such as trinkets and home decorations as items to focus on.

“As a visual artist I tend to take notice of the little details in my environment anyway, but as my world shrunk my inspiration zoomed in to the smaller details of everything around me even more,” she added.

“My inspiration became focussed on little occurrences which had immense impacts. I likened it to the chaos theory concept of the Butterfly Effect”.

The display will run at Fire Station Creative in Dunfermline from December 3 until January 3.
