Nicola Sturgeon has extended the temporary hospitality lockdown restrictions for another week.

It means bars and licensed restaurants in the city will remain closed for at least another seven days.

The First Minister said she would publish on Friday the new framework for through the winter and into next year for national or regional restrictions.

The new plan will start on November 2.

Ms Sturgeon said: “It leaves us with short term decision on temporary rules.

“I can confirm we have decided to extend these measures for a further week. It is not safe to lift them."

She said they will remain in place until 6am on Monday November 2

The latest daily figures showed there were 1739 new positive cases.  There were 874 in hospital and 73 in intensive care.

Of the new cases 602 were in Greater Glasgow and 520 in Lanarkshire.

Also there have been 28 additional deaths the highest since May 21

The new strategy of tiers of lockdown restrictions for different parts of the country is to be put in place form November 2 meaning there would be a gap of one week from temporary restrictions ending on Sunday night and the new plan being put in place.

Ms Sturgeon added: “ Today's figures on hospital and deaths are clearly concerning and we take them very seriously, however these figures relate to people who could have been infected two to three weeks  ago so should not be taken that the current restrictions are not having an impact.”

Business leaders in the city reacted to the news of the extension.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive Stuart Patrick said: "Businesses will be extremely disappointed that the restrictions have been extended beyond the planned 16-day period.

"There are now too many examples in the UK of local restrictions being implemented and then being allowed to run on well beyond their initial timetables.  This is seriously damaging business confidence and could be terminal for some companies leading to significant job losses.”
