THE Scottish Environment Protection Agency has been alerted about potentially hazardous chemicals dumped in buildings at the Westfield Industrial site, between Ballingry and Kinglassie.

Some roads around the developing Industrial Park have been the target for illegal dumping for most of this year, but now dumped containers of what seems to be potentially chemicals, have been discovered in some outbuildings which were near the former gas plant there.

Leaks from these containers have seen what is thought to be corrosive liquid going into the ground and posing a hazard.

Ballingry councillor Lea McLelland has alerted SEPA to the situation and hopes that it can be quickly dealt with.

With a number of major projects planned for the site of the former opencast mine, which once boasted the deepest hole in Europe, the illegal dumping around the site, made easy for the perpetrators by its remoteness, a major clean-up of the the approach areas and the outbuildings at the site is needed.
