FIFE MSP Alex Rowley has urged those who are in need, to apply for grants from the Scottish Welfare Fund, following reports from the Poverty and Inequality Commission that the fund has been underused during the pandemic.

Figures show that only 15% of the total £57.6m Scottish Welfare Fund budget was used between April and June this year and the MSP feels that there will be people out there needing the backing the fund can give but don't know how to access it.

The figures also showed that spending of the fund during lockdown was £1.1m lower than in the same period in 2019. The Poverty and Inequality Commission has suggested more money is needed for councils to raise awareness of the scheme and to help councils distribute the funds to those who need it.

Commenting on the news Mr Rowley said: “The Scottish Government has itself acknowledged that low income households are the hardest hit by the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We have seen a huge increase in the application for crisis grants but at the same time we also have a welfare fund here that is being underused.

“People need to know that support is there when needed and councils have a responsibility to make sure they utilise the funds available to make sure those that need financial help get it.

"Crisis and community care grants which can help with financial difficulties can be made directly with the council. This can be done by visiting the council website.

"I would urge anyone who is facing financial difficulties to apply.”
