WHILE the John Thomson Memorial Football children's football tournament, scheduled for the weekend, had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis, the famous Cardenden man, who died from injuries received while playing for Celtic against Rangers in 1931, was remembered on Saturday.

On Saturday September 5, 89 years to the day of the accident, wreaths were laid by various people through out the day at John Thomson's graveside, in Bowhill Cemetery, which included a large wreath on behalf of the John Thomson Memorial committee, Celtic Football Club and Celtic supporters, along with friends of the tournament the world over.

Said Alex Burns, MBE, chair of the John Thomson Memorial Committee: "This was to mark the anniversary of the tragic death of Cardenden's Prince of Goalkeepers.

"Flowers were also laid at the graveside of the miners who lost their lives in the Bowhill Pit disaster which happened just a few of weeks after the sad death of John Thomson."

The football tournament for kids of primary school age, was to have been played on Sunday at Moorside Park, Dundonald, but due to the current crisis had to be cancelled, the first time in almost 40 years it had not taken place.
