A LOCAL councillor is calling on Fife Council to open up local allotment allocations and support people who want to grow their own food.

Cowdenbeath and Kelty councillor, Alex Campbell, has written to council bosses expressing his concern that allotments are not being allocated due to Covid whilst Government guidelines allow for this to happen.

Cllr Campbell told the Times: “I have been contacted by local people who want to get an allotment but are being told there are no allocations.

"I have pointed out to those in charge of the allotments that the Government guidelines allow for allocations to take place and that having an allotment is good for both physical and mental health and as such should be viewed as part of the wider council agenda for supporting wellbeing in local communities".

The Kelty and Cowdenbeath councillor continued: “The virus has led to many people thinking about how they live their lives and what is important. "I know from speaking with plot holders that having a bit land to grow food and spend time on has helped many through the last few months. "I want to see the council encourage this not tell people there is no allocations taking place. "Council services must be able to respond to changing circumstances and open up in a safe and practical way to support people and communities and that must include opening up allotments”.
