MSP Alex Rowley has asked Fife Council Chief Executive, Steve Grimmond, if there are plans in place to stop any repeat of the floods which devastated homes in Cardenden Road, Cardenden.

He has written to the council chief hoping that he could update him on how things are progressing with the situation which saw 20 plus homes flooded when the Den Burn and the River Ore burst their banks.

The Fife MSP said in his letter: "There is the immediate issue of the people who do not have insurance or are not covered by their insurance. Do we have the numbers of people and what kind of assistance they need and is available?

"Has there been work done to understand why the burn overflowed as it did?

"I note that when the burn runs to the bridge there will be a block in high waters as the water cannot get through the small tunnel and will flood if the force of the water is too great. This leaves a very real chance that with high waters it will happen again".

He added: "Some residents reported to me that they sometimes see things floating from what would seem to be from old mine workings. So, where is the water coming from and are the water levels rising in the underground workings? I have previously talked with SEPA about rising water tables in Fife's mining works. They did at the time refer me to the coal authority and I will look this out"

The MSP also asked: "Who is responsible for keeping the burns running clear? I also understand there was a lot of debris blocking the burn on the night, where did the debris come from?

"The flood waters also came from the direction of the top side of the village as well, so waters were pouring down from a few directions. Is this being followed up?

"Was the drains maintained as they struggled to take water off the roads?

"There were also questions being asked about the new housing development which some said was being built on flood plains. Was a flood report carried out on this site before planning was given?

"I appreciate these are initial questions put to me and I assume some kind of report will be produced soon to look at all this issues and allow us to understand what happened and what needs to happen to ensure the people and their properties are protected. Can you say when we can get the initial findings?"
