A PLAN for 45 housing units to be built on land which 'persistently floods' has been given the green light by Fife Council's Central and West Area Planning Committee.

The application had been lodged with Fife Council by Campion Homes, on behalf of Kingdom Housing Association, for the site at Woodend, Cardenden, to supplement the social housing requirements in Fife and it attracted a number of objections.

These were lodged airing concerns about flooding issues including Cardenden Community Council.

Consultants asked to look at the flooding issues told the meeting: "The Community Council makes valid comments with respect to the existing flood risk at the site.

"The risks highlighted in the Community Council response are consistent with what was identified in our flood risk assessment. These risks have been identified and mitigation measures have been incorporated into the proposed site layout design.

"There is a risk of surface water flooding at the site and on roads around the site. A number of mitigation measures are proposed to manage the surface water flooding risk."

Cardenden Community Council were one of 40 objectors to the plans for the Woodend fields and council secretary David Taylor said that a key element in the success of the way ahead was maintenance of the ditch which would carry the water to the mechanism which would be in place to avoid flooding problems.

Said David: "The maintenance of the ditch is so important to avoiding the flooding which has dogged this part of the village.

"If this is fully maintained then it may be fine, otherwise there could be more problems."
