LOCHGELLY High School will open to pupils tomorrow despite a problem being detected with the hot water system.

On Monday one of the water testing results for the school, which was received at lunchtime, identified the need for further remedial action and as a precaution the decision was taken to ask the staff teams to work from home, until they had further information from the Property Services Team and IWS, water system specialists.

Fife MSP Alex Rowley was contacted by a constituent about the issue and he asked the education department for information on if it would affect the opening of the school.

He was told by the children's services department: “As part of the programme of re-opening our schools we have been undertaking water quality checks at all our school buildings to ensure they are safe.

“Today one of the water test results for Lochgelly High School, which we received at lunchtime, indicated an issue that needed to be confirmed and then resolved.

“As a precaution staff were sent home immediately. Further risk assessments have been carried out and we are now assured that the school can re-open as planned to pupils and staff on Wednesday.”

It added: "The water system results are localised so the PE block will not be in use, but there were already works taking place there. Some parts of the school will have no hot water for the first two weeks, but in these areas pupils will be able wash their hands with cold water and soap, and as an extra precaution will be asked to use hand sanitiser also, which will be available throughout the school.

"The cold-water system in place across these parts of the school is not affected and toilets will be fully useable".
