THERE was Sunday afternoon drama at Lochgelly Golf Club which saw one of the competitors in the Club Championship finals airlifted to hospital after collapsing on the 10th tee.

Gordon Fyfe was playing Alex Sharp jnr in the Seniors final and had just drawn level at the ninth. He was looking forward to making a strong start to the second nine but before he was able to drive he collapsed.

The club's Derek Clark takes up the story: "We managed to get through to the emergency services and Gordon felt he could make it in one of our buggies to the car park where we thought the ambulance would arrive.

"Things started to speed up though and the ambulance was soon in the car park and we also had the club defibrillator on hand. However, almost immediately the helicopter from the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance arrived on the 13th fairway and Gordon was taken to it and flown to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary."

Gordon had a stent put in and was soon recovering. Added Derek: "It seemed to be just a matter of minutes but the hospital was soon on the phone to say that Gordon was recovering from his operation.

"It really all added up to an incredible day and Alex has agreed that he and Gordon should replay their final when he is ready to get back into action."

There were almost a couple of hundred people about the club on Sunday, with groups of spectators watching the four finals and the arrival of the air ambulance added to the day's drama.

Derek said that news of Gordon recovering well had given everyone a lift at the club: "It has been quite a year.

"The membership has gone up by 90 in 2020, then but just before the season started the coronavirus crisis hit and the club was shut.

"When we got going in June the course was in great condition and the members enjoyed playing in the competitions we have had and the finals day was a fantastic occasion.

"Despite the drama of the air ambulance on the course, news of Gordon's recovery really made everything end finish as well as we could have hoped for."
