A LOCAL councillor is backing plans which would see added features near Lochore Meadows Country Park and could make it an even more popular public attraction.

A pre-planning application has been lodged with Fife Council by landowners, W Thomson and Sons, for a cafe, holiday lodges accommodation and retail space, among other amenities on their land to the Kelty side of the park, near to the western access to the Meedies.

The proposal would include seeking consent to convert an agricultural shed.

Cowdenbeath and Kelty councillor, Alex Campbell, said this week that with the appropriate conditions in place to guard wildlife and appropriate parking provision, he was in favour of the plans.

He told the Times: "This is a very interesting proposal which could bring jobs and people to the area.

"It would be necessary to ensure wildlife issues were properly addressed to ensure habitats were not affected in any way by the development and it is essential the car parking provision is wholly adequate.

"If these are addressed this could be a hugely successful venture bringing upwards of 70 holiday lodges, and at this time of year that could see a large number of people coming here with significant spending power.

"It certainly would be good for Kelty in particular and the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area in general."

Former Cowdenbeath Area Committee chair, Councillor Willie Clarke, talked about holiday lodges at the Meedies more than a decade ago and his plan may yet come to fruition.

The landowners hope to publish more details for the local public to look over in the coming weeks.
