FIFE Council has given Crossgates company John Collier Ltd, the green light to complete refurbishment of an area of the former Muir Dean Opencast mining site near the village.

Colliers had asked the local authority for permission to infill a disused minewater settlement lagoon with imported soils at the former opencast site at Inverkeithing Road.

A support statement for the plan said that John Collier and Sons have been involved in agriculture and land improvement works for a number of generations.

The statement added: "The development site comprises a former settlement lagoon which was in operation when the former Muir Dean Opencast site was operating. It is intended to restore this area, which will complete further minor areas of restoration works of this previous operational settlement lagoon.

"This proposed project would complete a further phase of the restoration works in this area of the site which has been put forward for a restoration award.

"This would be achieved by seeding as soon after the area has been profiled and soil coverage is complete".
