AN inscription to remember how Crossgates came together to help one another during the coronavirus pandemic is to be made on the Standing Stone.

The attraction within the Taft woodland area will have the words 'Crossgates Together 2020' inscribed to mark the community spirit shown by the village in recent months.

Ewan Lyall, chairman of the Crossgates Community Woodland Group, told the Times that a local photographer had created a vision of what the stone could look like using photoshop software.

Ewan said: "Alex Gilfillan is a local man that's done a lot for the community and when he posted his image of what the Standing Stone could look like with those words on it, a lot of people really liked it and we then approved the idea at our committee meeting.

"We'll use a local business to take care of the work but a date hasn't been set on that yet."

The large stone – located at the top of the large field which overlooks parts of Crossgates – was welcomed into the Taft at the start of lockdown and it is hoped that, with this new inscription, it will take on a new meaning within the woods.

Ewan commented: "The community spirit shown by Crossgates during lockdown and throughout this pandemic has been fantastic.

"The Crossgates Together Facebook page, which was made by Ross Bennet, has been fantastic in bringing people together even more.

"The past few months have been hard for many people, for many different reasons, but the support for one another has been brilliant and will hopefully be remembered.

"I think having the stone here, with those words on it, will act as a place where people can go to sit and reflect on both the good and bad times and how the village responded.

"This will just emphasise the community spirit even more."

The Taft currently hosts several attractions within it which include a Teddy Bears Picnic and Storytelling area, Fairy Dell, the Wishing Well and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

An idea for superhero gnomes was also suggested but will not be taken forward at this time with hopes the suggestion could instead be featured elsewhere within the village.
