CARDENDEN couple Peter and Mary Young celebrated 65 years of marriage on June 2, their Blue Sapphire Anniversary.

Both were born in Lochgelly and grew up a few streets from one another in the West End.

They worked for Lochgelly Co-operative Society and that is where their friendship grew and love blossomed.

Peter had to undertake national service but that was held up to let him captain the Under 18 Scottish football team!

The young couple married in St Fothad's Parish Church, Cardenden, on the June 25 1955.

Peter pursued a career at the Westfield Opencast site where he became the local TGWU representative.

He was obviously good at his job as he went on to spend the last 21 years of his working life as a full time official of the TGWU (Transport and General Workers Union, (now UNITE).

Mary meanwhile was far from idle, she set about building a lovely home for their family of three boys - Peter and twins, John and Paul.

Both Mary and Peter enjoyed their holiday cruises together and looking after their beautifully groomed garden.

Before Covid 19 struck they were also busy with their four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
