KIRKCALDY and Cowdenbeath MP, Neale Hanvey, has backed a Parliamentary motion condemning the behaviour of the Prime Minister’s advisor, Dominic Cummings, for his part in travelling 250 miles during lockdown, following complaints from constituents.

Mr Hanvey has also written to concerned constituents setting out his position that Mr Cummings should resign, following a flood of constituents' enquiries.

This all came as it emerged that Premier Boris Johnson's advisor had travelled over 250 miles from his London home to his parents' property in Durham in the early days of lockdown.

The Conservative Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, Douglas Ross, has subsequently resigned in protest over the way the Prime Minister had defended Mr Cummings, who addressed the media on Monday stating that he had made the trip due to Durham to ensure there would be care for he and his wife's four year-old son. He contended he acted legally and within the guidelines.

Commenting, Neale Hanvey said: “The vast majority of people have taken lockdown seriously and made huge sacrifices to try and limit the devastating impact of this virus.

“Some have heartbreakingly accepted that they cannot be there in their loved-one’s final hours and have understood the need to limit numbers at funerals.

“Personally, I’ve not been able to visit my elderly father, while some of my staff are shielding and haven’t left home for ten weeks.

“For the Prime Minister’s fixer to have broken lockdown is appalling, and for Mr Johnson to come out and defend him is staggering.

“It seems to be one rule for us and another for the Tory Westminster elite".

“If nothing else, when the person responsible for communications becomes the story, then their position is no longer tenable.

“It’s time for Dominic Cummings to do the right thing and resign.”
