A "TOTALLY devastated" committee has taken the decision to cancel this summer's Lochgelly Gala due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It was one of the few major events in the area that hadn't been called off and there was optimism that it could still go ahead in August, but those hopes have now been dashed.

A statement read: "It's with a heavy heart that Lochgelly Gala Committee is announcing that this year's gala, which was scheduled for Sunday August 16, will no longer take place due to the current and ongoing coronavirus pandemic and restrictions.

"The health and safety of our committee members/helpers and the community is our priority and therefore I'm sure you will all agree it's the right decision.

"We are totally devastated we're having to do this as we had lots of plans for a great day.

"With this in mind all we can hope for is that the 2021 gala, which will be on August 15 next year, will make up for this year's absence and social distance rules are removed by then.

"We look forward to seeing each and every one of you then. Please stay safe."
