BENARTY Fundraisers have been warm in their praise for the communities of the four villages and Lochgelly as they saw eight tonnes of supplies gathered for the food bank which serves the district.

Food donated totalled 3,727kg, plus four tonnes of onion and potatoes, while the money donated came to £3,303.

At the start of lock down there were concerns that the Benarty Food Bank may close due to food shortages through fewer people being able to get out to make donations but that is definitely not the case now.

The teams organised by the Fundraisers hit the communities of Ballingry, Lochore, Crosshill and Glencraig; and also Lochgelly, over three days each to see if they could get enough food donations from residents to bolster the supplies.

Through the support of local businessmen, Peter McGuire and Davie Farrell, the trailers hit the streets with the support of Superheroes and Minions, and were inundated with donations.

And what a success it turned out to be with the people of the communities ready to donate all sorts of food, and also money, to the Food Bank to ensure that there will now not be a shortage.

The Benarty Food Bank's Maggie Bell said: "What an incredible few days it was.

"The generosity of the public was unbelievable and to get so much food, and also the donations, was really incredible. It was a complete community effort in Benarty and Lochgelly.

"We cannot thank the Fundraisers and the communities enough for this support. All our worries about supplies have been removed thanks to this amazing support."

Maggie said that they were delighted to be able to help organisations such as Oor Wee Cafe, in Kelty and Lo'gelly Lunches, who have been doing takeaway sessions; and the Cardenden Community Fridge, which has been ensuring people in the ABCD villages have not been left without without food.

The Fundraisers' James Fotheringham said: "What a week! I just wanted to say a huge thanks to our followers and supporters and everyone who made donations in both Benarty and Lochgelly.

"Many thanks to David Farrell and Peter McGuire for all their help and a BIG Extra Special Shout Out to all the volunteers from Lochgelly and Benarty. And thank you Benarty and Lochgelly citizens.

"When we set out on the venture we hoped to be able to have a good few dozens of bags to give to the food bank, but what happened was really unbelievable. The support we received was something no one could he dreamt of.

"We thank everyone who played a part in this."
