COMMUNITY Workers and local councillors are singing the praises of the generosity of residents in Cardenden, and the wider Cowdenbeath area, as large quantities of food are becoming available for families needing assistance.

With the huge increase in the use of the two area's two Food Banks, in this particularly difficult time, the continued use and need for Cardenden Community Fridge has been bolstered by the wonderful donations which have come flooding in from the local residents, the enormous work of the Fare Share project and the added donations from the Benarty Food Bank, and Cardenden local Co-op, has greatly increased what can now be offered to the folk of Cardenden .

The Community Fridge has always offered fresh produce and perishables such as bread, milk, butter and eggs. Now with the additional donations they are providing selections of dried food such as rice, pasta, cereals, and tinned food.

Said Councillor Rosemary Liewald: "This is a very much needed outlet of support.

"The continued lockdown does not allow for a number of our residents to travel to the larger supermarkets and with many more applications for Universal Credit, families are struggling.

"This vital support line is offering those families and individuals just that little bit less of a worry".

Margaret King, Community Education Worker (Bowhill and Cardenden), along with Alan Johnson and Michelle Gray, have been organising and assisting the operations of the Community Fridge, at Bowhill Centre, during the period and Margaret said: "We must thank the community for the outstanding work they are doing".

Margaret , Alan and Michelle add a smile, a joke and great enthusiasm to the work they do each week, which is fantastic.

Councillor Liewald, added: "I am overwhelmed by the support right across Fife and in particular in my ward of Lochgelly, Cardenden, and Benarty.

"We have seen these communities come together in the past, and we have throughout the Covid 19 crisis, seen generosity that is unprecedented from our residents.

"Through Benarty and Lochgelly, with the food collections trucks (Benarty Fundraisers) to Lo'gelly Lunches, to the folk over here in Cardenden, it is staggering, and I know that this will continue to support the families who just need that little bit extra assistance. I thank each and every one of you".
