COWDENBEATH MSP Annabelle Ewing has aired her beliefs that the current lockdown has provided the best opportunity to carry our repairs to roads and railways.

Following a statement by the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity (Michael Matheson), during a session in the Scottish Parliament, Ms Ewing raised important questions regarding allowing vital road and rail repairs, and maintenance, to proceed,

Speaking afterwards, Ms Ewing said: “The Cabinet Secretary for Transport was updating the Parliament on the measures that are being taken in relation to Scotland’s transport system, in response to the challenges being presented by Covid-19 and I raised with him the issue of vital road and rail repairs and maintenance.

“Obviously appropriate risk assessments would have to be made but the relatively fewer numbers of journeys on both road and rail, being made at present do give an opportunity for repairs and maintenance to be carried out that would be both timely and provide the opportunity for much-needed work.

“The Cabinet Secretary confirmed that existing guidance allows for essential works to be undertaken on both the road and rail network and I was pleased that officials are reviewing all major transport projects in order to identify changes in the guidance on construction that might allow them to become active again.”
