THE volunteers and council staff who make the Oor Wee Cafe and Lo'gelly Lunches takeaway sessions work have been delighted with the reaction to the different approach during the Covid-19 emergency.

The Oor Wee Cafe Tuesday sessions at Kelty Community Centre had become a firm favourite for people looking for a bite to eat and a bit of company; and the story was the same on Fridays, at Lochgelly Town Hall, for the 11am to 1pm sessions run by the volunteers of Lo'gelly Lunches.

However, when the coronavirus struck and the Government directed lockdown was put in place, the sessions were suspended.

But the council and volunteers were determined not to be beaten as they realised that many of their regular visitors on Tuesdays and Fridays relied on the sessions in Kelty and Lochgelly to get a good meal.

Helping organise the two sessions was Cowdenbeath Area Community Manager, Sarah Roxburgh, who said: "It has been quite busy at Oor Wee Cafe and has been a very well received service with many commenting how grateful they were of the support from us.

"There were excellent food donations and the individual portions of frozen soup and stovies were very popular while we also had 50 portions of macaroni and cheese bagged and ready to takeaway."

Community education worker Lorraine Mullen was busy helping get things ready for the first session of Lo'gelly Lunches and stressed how important the fridges were to the operation of the Friday sessions.

She thanked the facilities who had made them available and the people who had transported them to the Town Hall.

The takeaway sessions at the Town Hall, admittedly don't have the same social impact as the normal Friday lunch days, but there still is some good banter and as the volunteers stressed, people were able to get a nice packed lunch.

Both cafes were supported by donations from the Shimla Palace Restaurant in Cowdenbeath last week which was very well received by volunteers and the visitors.
