THE discolouration of the Lochty Burn, which feeds into the River Leven, could be caused by discharge from the former Westfield Opencast site, between Kinglassie and Ballingry.
The Burn has developed an orange colour and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency is investigating complaints by the River Leven Angling Club about increasing problems with the Leven through ferrous pollution.
Officials of the club claimed that only a few years ago they were catching up to 60 salmon, but last year that was down to none.
SEPA have been involved in investigations on seepage from the former opencast site for many years and they are working with Fife Council to see what the reasons for the River Leven situation are.
