TWO Kelty sisters are helping up to 50 senior citizens and vulnerable residents keep going the during coronavirus lockdown.

Frances and Andrea Hughes, along with pals Susan Forrester and Lisa Callaghan, are serving up between 30 and 50 meals a day.

It's become a community effort, as Andrea explained: "When the lockdown started, Frances and myself took some soup to our elderly neighbours and then things gathered pace.

"People started donating food and money to buy items and Frances started cooking all sorts of meals and inside a few days we were going around 30 people in the village, not only senior citizens but those who are disabled and frail.

"We just want to ensure that they don't find it too difficult to get a good meal."

These range from everybody's favourite, mince and tatties, to pasta dishes – you name it Frances will cook it!

When word got round the village what the ladies were doing, support grew and, now, while Frances makes sure they have plenty to distribute, Andrea, Susan and Lisa get into the car and take the meals around the village.

Added Andrea: "We have enough ingredients and items to ensure we can get around 50 people if need be, thanks to the support of our brilliant community.

"We have to say though, without the support of everyone, none of this would be possible, from everyone who donates food items and money, through to Alex Campbell at the North Road Garage, who supplies the fuel to help us make our deliveries.

"There will be a special day for kids this Wednesday (yesterday) when we will have a variety of meals for youngsters, again thanks to the amazing support we have had.

"And that includes the Whispering Women Group, in Cowdenbeath, who have donated a whole load of confectionery for the children.

"I have to thank Frances for her amazing work in the kitchen, and Susan and Lisa for helping get the meals out, but most of all, the community for their unbelievable support."

Andrea also said the home baking from Kelty Hearts chairman, Ian Thomson, and Linda and Tony Martin, topped everything off.

Alex Campbell, also one of the local councillors for Kelty, was only too happy to help the ladies with their fuel: "What a team they make," he said.

"For them to be delivering up to 50 meals a day, to some of our very vulnerable residents, is fantastic and the way the community has responded to their efforts really is unbelievable."
