A COWDENBEATH businessman has been making sweet gestures to NHS staff as they continue to save lives.

Gavin Paterson has already donated 20 packed boxes of sweets to the Victoria Hospital with another 20 set for the Queen Margaret, in Dunfermline.

He runs The Candee Man shop, in Cowdenbeath, and he's looking to "do his bit" to bring some smiles to faces during lockdown.

He told the Times: "I'm dead proud of our NHS right now.

"I just think all of our NHS staff are heroes for what they're doing for everyone.

"I wanted to do my bit my donating some sweets for them and the staff I spoke to were really over the moon.

"It's a small gesture, but I want to keep donating to them and other key workers who could use a wee boost."

He is matching all donations he receives on normal orders from the local community to bolster his stock and provide boxes to as many key workers as he can.

"The amount of donations we've received has been overwhelming," he said.

"People have donated everything from £1 to £20.

"They've been incredibly generous and we're putting that to good use by spending that money on more sweets so we can then give boxes away for free to key workers and those who could use a smile. "I've been on such a high in the last few weeks because it's great to bring a smile to people's faces. It's nice to be nice.

"All of my staff and drivers have been incredible and they deserve all the credit, not me.

"They're the ones who pack the boxes and deliver them."
