A LOCHGELLY High School pupil produced an excellent performance in the North of Scotland District 1010 Rotary Young Writer Competition. The theme of ‘Connections’ produced some outstanding entries in all three age brackets and with 16 Rotary Clubs making entries ensured competition was fierce.

The entries in all three categories, Junior (ages7-10), Intermediate (11-13) and Senior (14-17) were very competitive, giving the judges a most challenging task.

Lochgelly High's Leonie Whiteford won the Cowdenbeath Rotary Club Young writer competition and the club put her forward for the final in the Senior competition and the LHS competitor finished third.

Said the club's youth co-ordinator Gerry Grieve: "We done to Leonie, there was a big number of entries in the senior section and she did really well to get in the top three places.

"Congratulations to her for her efforts and also to the teaching staff for their support".

There were also entries from the Carnegie Dunfermline and West Fife clubs who also did well.

The results were, Junior, Winner – Ellen White sponsored by Auchterarder & District; Second – Flora Cameron sponsored by Carnegie Dunfermline; Third – Melissa Borsch sponsored by Dundee Claverhouse.

Intermediate, Winner - Emily Anderson sponsored by Elgin; Second - Grace Campbell sponsored by West Fife; Third - Phoebe Cartwright sponsored by Dundee Claverhouse. Commended – Henry Chalmers sponsored by Auchterarder & District and Isla MacGregor sponsored by Carnegie Dunfermline.

Senior, Winner - Calum Cameron sponsored by Dingwall; Second - Paige Buchan sponsored by Montrose Third - Leonie Whiteford sponsored by Cowdenbeath.

The winning entries in all three categories have been sent to RIBI for this year’s grand final.

Certificates will be sent to clubs for all entries in due course and prize money for winners, second and third places will be sent direct to the appropriate club treasurer.

Thank you all for making this a successful competition and please continue your support for future years. If you can persuade colleagues from other clubs to participate that would be very helpful.

Alistair Campbell, District Co-ordinator for Young Writer
