CARDENDEN and Kinglassie MP, Peter Grant, has been appointed to one of Westminster’s most powerful Select Committees.

The House of Commons agreed on Monday to appoint Mr Grant to the Committee of Public Accounts whose job it is to scrutinise all UK Government spending.

Commenting on the appointment, the MP for Glenrothes and Central Fife, said: “I am very pleased to have been nominated as the SNP’s representative on the Public Accounts Committee.

"This is recognised as one of the most powerful committees in Parliament and claims to be the oldest Parliamentary Select Committee in the world.

"Its role is to act as the spending watchdog for about £1.7 trillion of UK Government spending. While a lot of this only covers England and Wales, departments such as the DWP, HMRC and Ministry of Defence have a huge impact on Scotland.

“All of the Select Committee places are now confirmed and the Public Accounts Committee Chair, Meg Hillier, has already arranged for us to get stuck into the job straight away, with committee meetings on Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon.”
