A SPECIAL birthday celebration took place at the Fife Day Care Service in Lumphinnans on Friday.

An early party was thrown for service user Lizzy Cross who turns 100 today (Thursday).

Mrs Cross, from Kelty, visits the Cedar Avenue based facility once a week and staff and volunteers were delighted to help her celebrate the landmark anniversary. Service manager Carol Reddington said the birthday girl still joins in with their weekly activities.

“You don’t get people reaching a century very often so we felt we wanted to celebrate,” she said. “She comes to us every Friday and is still able to join in with all the activities. She is inspirational to us all – staff, volunteers, fellow service users because she has got a can-do attitude and is very, very independent.

“She had a great time. She kept saying how generous everyone was and she was saying it was great to be able to celebrate with her day care family.”

Mrs Cross’ daughter Elizabeth, who now lives in Texas, joined in with the celebrations which included entertainment, lunch and a cutting of the cake.

“Her birthday isn’t until Thursday but we would not have seen her till after the day and wanted to celebrate with her,” added Carol. “She lives in Kelty and is originally from Dundee. She met her late husband who was from Kelty when he was visiting his sister who lived next door to Lizzie. They got married and she moved to Kelty during the war years.

“They went onto have three daughters and she has been a Kelty lass ever since. She is an inspiration to us all. We ask her what is the secret and she says it is positive mental attitude and being a glass half full person and having a can do attitude instead of a can’t do attitude.”
