THE Bard was to the fore at Thursday’s Cowdenbeath Rotary Club meeting.

The club’s Burns Supper saw 50 people gather to celebrate the works of the national bard under the knowledgeable eye of Master of Ceremonies John Gilfillan.

John put together a line-up of top class Burnsians who thoroughly entertained everyone with a mixture of songs and poems.

After The Selkirk Grace, from past president Alex Cuthbertson, the haggis, carried by Poosie Nancy, Maureen Cuthbertson, was piped in by Callum Cleminson, from Lochgelly High School.

The address to the haggis was expertly given by Ronnie Fleming and after a lovely meal was provided by the staff of Wee Jimmies The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns was performed by John Gilfillan, who studied the Bard’s history in his own inimitable style.

John also contributed ‘Tam O’Shanter’, in dramatic fashion while Archie Abercrombie, another expert raconteur, contributed ‘My Father was a Farmer’ in truly impressive style.

Archie also gave his style of ‘To a Louse’ before joining John to portray ‘The Twa’ Dogs’ in superb style.

Ronnie Fleming was able to give a fantastic account of ‘Holy Wullie’s Prayer’ while there were two fine songs from Immediate Past President Norman Black in the shape of ‘My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose’ and ‘Ae Fond Kiss’.

Meanwhile Ronnie Fleming sang ‘Westlin Winds’ superbly.

The Toast to the Lassies was contributed in very amusing style, by Tom Russell, while the response was equally as funny from Debbie Aitken.

John Gilfillan was delighted the way the evening went: “It was great to see so many people there enjoying themselves and I know that the raconteurs and singers found it an equally enjoyable experience.”
