RESIDENTS of both Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly were taken aback to see a much bigger flare at the Fife Ethylene Plant last night and smoke being produced.

The activity came as the start-up procedure at the plant moved forward.

On the Mossmorran Action Group Facebook page there were observations such as: "Big flame again and accompanying smoke this evening."

And: "How and why is this allowed?"

FEP reported that it was due to moving flaring from the big stack to ground flaring facilities at Shell: "We are currently working with our neighbours Shell to move from our elevated flare to the ground flare.

"During this move, you may see some fluctuation in the elevated flare. We are working to complete this move safely and as quickly as possible".
