A NEW group aimed at helping ease isolation problems in the Benarty area proved a big success.

The Benarty Events Group had their inaugural Companions Club afternoon in Flockhouse Avenue Community Centre on Friday and committee members were greatly encouraged by the turn out and reaction to the day.

BEG have been planning some events for the older generation for a while and they are hopeful this is the first of many to come.

The Companions Club is about encouraging senior citizens to go along and enjoy a bite to eat and meet new friends and rekindle old friendships.

Said BEG chairman Eddie Easson: "Those who attended on Friday enjoyed an interesting afternoon viewing pictures from bygone years supplied by Community Education Worker Michael Payne. It brought back many memories for people.

"Refreshments were served by local councillors Lea McLelland and Mary Lockhart and the Group are thankful to the two ladies for their support in organising the event. Thanks also goes to The Benarty Centre for the use of the Centre and Jean Webster for the delicious soup".

Added Eddie: "On Friday there will be another BEG Companions Club day in the Benarty Centre starting at 11.00am and running until 2pm. Already more people have shown an interest in coming.

"Why not come along and enjoy the afternoon and meet new friends".
