A LOCHGELLY schoolgirl suffering from a rare condition which resulted in her having a tumour removed from her brain in the summer has managed to raise over £3,500 for the ward where she was treated.

Macy McShane is one in around 100 children from across the world who suffer from a growth secreting pituitary gland tumour.

She received the diagnosis in the summer after she had first gone to the opticians because she unable to see properly out of her left eye.

Mum Emma said a referral to the eye specialist at the Victoria Hospital was quickly followed by an MRI scan which revealed that Macy had a large tumour on her pituitary gland.

"It was pushing on her optic nerve which was what was causing her not to be able to see," she explained.

"It is a lot more complex though as we have been told she is one in around 100 kids in the world to have this condition which is caused by a growth secreting hormone. She has to attend the sick kids hospital every fortnight and once a month she gets a jag to try and stop her growing.

"It has been a nightmare. She will be on medication for life as she is not producing some hormones."

Surgeons managed to take away 50 to 60 per cent of the tumour, however, Macy still faces fortnightly trips to the hospital as well as monthly injections.

"She is quite laid back and takes it all in her stride and she is doing good," added Emma. "She is missing a bit of school because she is back and forward to the hospital but she is coping with that.

"After her operation, she was in intensive care for a couple of days then she was moved to the high dependency and eventually put down to ward seven, which is the neurology ward of the sick kids. When she came out, she decided she wanted to raise money for ward seven for the other kids in there."

Macy, along with friend Keava Doig, mum Emma and Keava's mum Nicole Sinclair, decided to do Rory Young’s “Tiger Escapade” 10k assault course at Lochore Meadows to raise funds.

"It was torrential rain so we were soaked and muddy but we had great fun," added Emma. "Macy and her friend were hoping to raise £500 but they got a lot more.

"Overall they raised an amazing £3,655.45 – included in this was a massive £1,800 donated by Exxon Mobil where Macy's big brother Kearn works, so she is chuffed to bits."
