A MOTHER and daughter duo have taken the plunge of opening their own business together in Pitreavie.

Morgan Cartwright, 20, has spent the last four years working in the beauty industry but decided to put her own stamp on things with mum Lisa.

After setting up her business from home, Morgan found quickly she needed a bigger space to help with client demand.

Now, she has five other staff working from her salon, 'Beyond the Mirror', with another two set to start soon.

On top of that, the new business owner has made it as a top 10 finalist for Nail Technician of the Year at the Scottish NBL (Nails, Brows and Lashes) awards, which take place on Sunday.

The salon will also open up as a training academy for Missu products in January.

Morgan added: "I've worked in salons but because I am still quite young, I wasn't allowed to progress.

"I really pushed myself and started treating clients from my home and after only about two months it just went mental!

"We came back from holiday as a family and I said to my mum I really want to open a salon."

The salon at Pitreavie Court is inspired by Morgan's childhood in the Caribbean in Belize, where she lived from age three to 14, while the name behind the business reminds customers that their beauty is not just defined by what they see on the outside.

"I was always good at art at school and I'm able to incorporate that in my nail designs," Morgan added.

"The experience I had in other salons though made me determined to progress and I really pushed myself.

"Now I have my own salon aged 20 and I think it is a big achievement.

"I think it's great working with my mum, we're very close so it is just like working with your friend!"

Lisa has a background in recruitment and HR so the business and beauty world is completely new to her.

She said: "Everybody thinks we're mad working together as Morgan is still at home!

"But it has not been stressful at all and it is just like working with your best friend.

"It's very challenging having your own business but we're also trying to give back to the community.

"We're trying to set up different things and we've become an Alzheimer's-friendly salon."
