LOCHORE Meadows Country Park's loch is back open to the public after almost two weeks out of action following the death of fish.

The Park's Facebook Page announced today: "We have been advised that the restrictions imposed on access to the water at Lochore Meadows Country Park two weeks ago have now been lifted.

"SEPA have advised us that the water is safe to use. The most likely explanation for the death of a number of fish is a naturally occurring bio-toxin which is no longer present.

"We are grateful to park users for their patience during this period".

Meanwhile Cowdenbeath MSP Annabelle Ewing wants the results of SEPA's ongoing investigations into the death of the loch's creatures published as soon as possible.

Ms Ewing said: “Lochore Meadows Country Park have posted on their Facebook page that they have been advised by SEPA that the water at Lochore Meadows is safe to use and restrictions on access have been lifted.

“When the news of the fish deaths arose, I wrote to SEPA and today I received a reply which stated that they suspect the fish to have been killed by natural causes, that their analysis of samples had not shown the presence of any toxins and that everything they measured was within normal levels.

“Nevertheless, I am somewhat surprised that an all clear has been given when there is clearly so much uncertainty about what precisely killed some 200 fish and that SEPA’s investigations are still ongoing.

“Those further investigations need to be expedited and the results publicised so that everyone who uses the park has all the information they need.”
