THE organisers of Cowdenbeath's first ever 5k event could hardly believe the weather conditions which hit the area on Sunday.

After weeks of spells of heavy rain the 5k and Fun Day, based around Central Park, was a massive success, helped by the warm sunny weather conditions.

Cowdenbeath Civic Week Committee organised the event alongside Jog Cowdenbeath, Cowdenbeath FC and Glenfield Self Storage.

Upwards of 200 runners, in all age groups, took part in the event which saw competitors heading out of Central Park, along the street leading to High Street heading towards the Fountain, before turning up Broad Street.

From there they ran towards Woodend Road, and at the junction with Hill of Beath Main Street, headed north towards the turn-off into Moss-side Road before heading back to High Street and then to the finish in Central Park.

The first male competitor home was Fife AC's Kenny Gorman, in a time of 17.22 minutes and the first female competitor was Angela Sandilands, of Carnegie Harriers, in a time of 20.10 minutes.

Cowdenbeath MSP, Annabelle Ewing, was at the event and presented the medals that the competitors received.

Full results were as follows, 1st male Kenny Gorman Fife AC 17.22mins; 2nd male Steven Bowman; 3rd male Wright Beveridge PH. 1st female Angela Sandilands Carnegie Harriers 20.10mins; 2nd female Kay Somerville Andrew Allan Architecture (AAA); 3rd female Kirsty Hepburn AAA .

The Civic Week Committee was delighted with the way the day went and secretary Claire Morgan said: "The weather was just what we hoped for and it was good to see how the co-organised event went.

"Without all of the Jog Cowdenbeath, Cowdenbeath FC, Glenfield Self Storage and Civic Week Committee teams pooling their expertise and experience together it would never have happened. A first for Cowdenbeath and possibly not the last?!?!".

The co-organisers will have a debrief next week to examine how things went and look ahead.
