THERE will be history created in Cowdenbeath on Sunday when the town's first ever 5k race takes place and it will be the latest initiative by the town's Civic Week Committee.

The Fun Day starts at 11.30am and finishes at 2pm, with the race starting at noon, and the first finishers estimated to cross the line after approximately 20 minutes.

But this first 5k will also be a big family event with a Fun Day taking place with loads of entertainment for people of all ages.

Civic Week Committee, secretary Claire Morgan, said: "The 5k starts at Central Park and heads out on to the High Street and will move towards Broad Street.

"Runners will continue up Broad Street and along Woodend Place, towards Hill of Beath, where they will then follow the route along the back of Greenbank Drive towards the ‘fish tail’ where they will then swing down Moss-side Road heading for ‘the line’ (green space) back towards Central Park.

"In addition to the 5k event there will also be a community fun day going on within the grounds of Central Park with food, refreshments inflatables, stalls, entertainment from Mr Mohawk, face painting etc.

"Although the schools will have just returned from their summer break, we are hoping that our local primary schools will be able to get teams together to be able to take part in “Catch the Coo,” where they will compete to catch Cowdenbeath FC mascot Bluebell the Coo!

"We hope that people will turn out to wish the runners all the best, whether it be at Central Park or on the route, in the first ever Cowdenbeath 5k, and maybe stay a while to see the first finishers cross the line!

"It is set to be a great afternoon – we just hope the weather behaves!"

As this is a road race, the minimum age for entry is 12 for Health & Safety and insurance purposes but really it is all about people enjoying themselves.

Runners of all abilities are going to take part from the fleet footed to those who are real fun runners.

The number pick-up will be at Central Park Stadium, High Street, Cowdenbeath, KY4 9QQ from 10:00 am to 11:30 am on race day. This will also be the start and end point of the race.

There will be a short pre-race briefing at 11:45 am the race will start promptly at 12 noon.

As well as marshalls at designated points there will be temporary road closures in place to make the 5k as safe as possible for everyone involved.

The Civic Week Committee's Alex Haddow added: "It is an historic day for the town and it should be a real community event with fun for all the family.

"We are hoping the people of the town come out in big numbers to enjoy the 5k race and also what will be going on at Central Park where there will be loads of fun to be had."
