THERE was a carnival atmosphere in Cowdenbeath at the weekend for their annual gala day.

Mardi Gras was the theme of the day and the traditional parade boasted an array of colourful characters.

The gala marked the culmination of Cowdenbeath Civic Week which had a range of activities, contests and events going on from the shop window competition and pet shows to football, bowls and golf.

A Civic Week spokesperson said: “Our royal party, Queen Shannon and Princesses Freya and McKenzie, did an outstanding job throughout civic week and on gala day. They were an absolute pleasure to work with and really did enter into the spirit of it all. They aren’t quite done yet and we’ll be keeping in touch with them as they still have a few important jobs to do.

“As well as the fairground and inflatables at the park there was a number of stalls to browse and also performances from No 1 Sun, Black Star Steel band, Cowdenbeath Majorettes, On Pointe Academy of Performing Arts, Love 2 Dance, Zodiac School of Dance, Fiona Ferguson’s Highland Dancers, the Newfoundland Dogs and Lochgelly Tae Kwon Do.

“It’s the same message of thanks for our volunteers. Whether you sold event tickets or wristbands, helped with the bunting or gazebos, added sides to lorries, did a bit of stewarding, helped build the gala marquee, moved boxes, picked up litter or offered us words of encouragement and support in what has been a rollercoaster of a week.

“Our biggest thanks has to go to Mr Sun for his support and his appearance on the day. And the weather did behave quite well in the end.”
