DOUGLAS Chapman feels that learner drivers in West and Central Fife deserve better than having their local driving test centre temporarily replaced.

The Dunfermline Driving Test Centre, which covers both the Dunfermline and west Fife villages plus the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area, at one stage was set to close due to the lease on the Pitreavie Drive Centre running out.

The loss of it would mean learner drivers and instructors having to change their routes, which normally take in the test route in Dunfermline. If the temporary home is lost then Kirkcaldy would be the nearest test office meaning and increase in learning costs.

When the lease finally runs out on May 31 the Vine Conference Centre has offered their premises as a replacement in Garvock Hill, Dunfermline.

Crossgates, Hill of Beath and Moss-side MP, Mr Chapman said: “I had already written to the DVSA and the Secretary of State for Transport, and I raised the issue on the floor of the House of Commons.

"While I am delighted that an alternative venue has been found we know this only temporary and Dunfermline and West and Central Fife needs and deserves a permanent driving test centre dedicated to the needs of future learner drivers, driving schools and to drive up competency standards to reduce accidents on our roads.

“Can I thank the team at the Vine Centre for stepping into the breach at the last minute and for providing the facilities required and to the DVSA, who I hope will continue their search for a permanent test centre in Dunfermline.”

At Business Questions in the House of Commons: “I hear that the DVSA, who run driving test centres, may be closing a centre in Dunfermline in my constituency - at great inconvenience and cost to learner drivers and driving instructors.

“Would the Leader of the House agree to a debate on the strategic direction of the DVSA so any proposed closures of driving centres may be averted.”

Dunfermline MSP, Shirley-Anne Somerville, has welcomed the news that the Vine Conference Centre has stepped up to the plate, to ensure that people can continue to take their driving tests in Dunfermline.
