MSP Alex Rowley this week joined with ‘Children in Scotland’ campaigning in the Scottish Parliament for change to ensure children can enjoy their rights and experience greater equality.

The children’s charity is calling on the Scottish Government to top-up child benefit by £5 per week to support children out of poverty and they say: “It could cover, for example: seven breakfasts of cereal, milk, fruit juice and a banana, or taking part in a school trip or out of school activity each week, or, over two months. A good quality winter coat – all things that can have a critical impact on children’s life chances”.

Mr Rowley said: “The levels of child poverty in Scotland are rising at an unacceptable level and we need direct action to address this.

"Topping up child benefit by £5 a week is one of the tools at our disposal in Scotland and it is one that I believe we should use”.
