A MEMORIAL to late Crossgates army captain David Seath has been installed close to where he collapsed while running the London Marathon.

This weekend's event will be the third since Captain Seath, a commando who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East with the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery and the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery respectively, passed away while running in aid of Help for Heroes.

He suffered a cardiac arrest just three miles short of the finish line and, following his death, family members – led by brother Gary – launched the Captain Seath Memorial Fund in his memory.

The charity, which raises money for armed forces personnel and veterans living with life-changing physical injuries and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) via Help for Heroes, has raised more than £290,000 and will hosts its third annual 5K run / walk event in Dunfermline's Pittencrieff Park on Sunday.

Ahead of that event, which last year saw almost 200 people take part and raise £1,400, a memorial plaque on a bench within London's Whittington Gardens – located opposite the 23-mile mark for the marathon, close to where Captain Seath fell – has been arranged by close friend Cath Munro.

She said: "I have visited this garden many times since Dave died – to laugh, to cry, to reflect and to remember. I am so pleased that there is a permanent tribute to Dave here, for those who knew him as well as for those who weren’t lucky enough to see his cheeky smile.

"He was an incredible person and a wonderful friend. He is very dearly missed."

Gary commented: "As a family, we are incredibly grateful to Cath for making this wonderful gesture in memory of Captain David Seath, which will prove a very poignant, powerful site to visit for friends, family and the general public in the future."

Runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abiltities are welcome to join in this Suinday's event, which begins at 10am, and costs just £5, with all funds received by the fund.

It has now supported 250 military personnel through Help for Heroes' 'Quick Reaction Fund', which is used to provide specialist sports equipment, respite breaks, PTSD therapy, employment placements and training courses.
