A KELTY Primary School girl has chopped off her long locks in support of a fellow pupil who is battling a brain tumour.

Julia Laranja, aged 8, has been growing her hair for the past year to donate to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for kids suffering from cancer.

Her mum Emily says the P4 student was inspired to do something after learning that follow pupil "Wee Joe" had been diagnosed with a tumour.

Kelty Primary Pupils have been doing all sorts of fundraising for seven-year-old Joe since his parents found out that he had a brain tumour in February last year.

This has included making a charity single, with money going to help Joe's family expenses through his journey.

Emily said: "Joe had been diagnosed with cancer and Julia is a very kind girl so it kind of overwhelmed her.

"When she sees anything in the media about this sort of thing she just thinks how can that happen.

"When Julia found out she could donate her hair she became quite determined to do it!"

Added Emily: "She went for a pixie cut too because she wanted to give as much hair as she could.

"She first thought about it last year and has been growing it long. We measured it in the Easter holidays at 35cm and she decided just to go for it.

"She has not told anyone at the school at the moment, she just wanted to help others.

"I think she's a wee bit nervous about returning to see her school mates!"

Julia has raised £168 so far but is waiting on some donations before handing over the money to charity.

Julia said: "I think I'm just starting to get used it!

"My friend saw me but she barely recognised me!

"Lots of people wanted to support me and were proud of what I did."
