A DUNFERMLINE man who tried to smash his way into a flat to steal furniture from it has been given extra jail time.

Jason MacDonald, 32, of Broomhead Drive, was caught in the act by security staff at the flats.

MacDonald, currently in jail for other offences, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on May 12, he tried to break into a flat in Broomhead Drive by forcing open the door with a hammer with intent to steal.

Depute fiscal Alistair McDermid said: “He was seen by security staff at around 10am at the door trying to open it with a hammer.

“He said he ‘felt like doing a couple of houses’ and he wanted to be sectioned.”

Defence solicitor Stephen Morrison said: “He was attempting to break in to steal furniture from a house that was empty at the time.”

Sheriff Craig McSherry imposed a six-month jail term to be served consecutively to his current term.

MacDonald was jailed for 17-and-a-half months recently at the same court for a series of offences, including assaulting a taxi driver and spitting on a police officer in court.
