EIGHTY per cent of drivers entering the village of Cluny are exceeding the 30mph limit.

Cowdenbeath Area Committee was told that on Wednesday, by Transportation's Phil Clarke, in a report on speeding complaints from villagers.

Said Mr Clarke: "Residents have raised concerns relating to traffic speed on the B922 in Cluny from the roundabout at the B98,1 to the end of the 30mph limit north of Clarendon House.

"A speed survey was arranged to ascertain the level of compliance on this stretch of road and the results showed that 80 per cent of the drivers were exceeding 30 and 20 per cent of these were exceeding 40. Indeed, more than 100 vehicles are exceeding 50mph each day.

"The traffic causes concern for residents emerging from or entering adjacent properties and there is also a farm access, along with access to a care home at this location.

"Pedestrians crossing near the roundabout to access bus stops is also a concern as the volume and speed of traffic makes it difficult for people to find a safe gap to cross."

Committee chair, Councillor Linda Erskine, said that this was a major problem because the road was used as a main link between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.

She added: "The fact is that this is a very busy road and unfortunately too many drivers take no heed of the speed limit so it is no wonder that the residents have real concerns.

"It is right that we should be looking at trying to get something in place to tackle the problem."

Vice chair, Councillor Rosemary Liewald, said that at times the volume of traffic saw big tail backs on this road so it definitely needed attention.

Mr Clarke's recommendation was, that given the geometry and traffic flows he felt that traffic cushions would be the most effective option to tackle traffic speeds and residents had no concerns about these being installed outside their homes.

The committee agreed to go ahead with promoting the Road Traffic Order to start the process of getting the cushions installed.
