SOCIAL media allegations made about holiday activity programmes in Kelty and Benarty were slammed at Cowdenbeath Area Committee on Wednesday.

It was said that there were allegations on a social media outlet that money had been 'misappropriated' to see Kelty youngsters have better summer activities than those in Benarty.

But committee chair, Councillor Linda Erskine, hit out at the suggestion stating that 'what was done in Kelty was done for the right reasons'.

The issue was brought to the committee by youth representative member, Bailey-Lee Robb, who said: "I think that the summer activity programmes last year sponsored by this committee were first class.

"However, it has to be of concern that some points made on social media that Kelty had a better programme than Benarty through some sort of underhand activity, was totally uncalled for and unfair."

Councillor Erskine said: "The posts made suggested that council officers had been deliberately spending more money in one area in place of another which was not true.

"What happened was that one of the senior members of staff involved in Kelty sustained a terminal illness and the staff worked very hard to try to go the extra mile to make sure that the Kelty programme did not suffer from the unfortunate situation.

"Everything that was done was for the right reasons and to make allegations through social media of some sort of syphoning off of funds is truly false and unacceptable."

Benarty councillor Lea McLelland agreed but did observe that perhaps more trips for Benarty youngsters could be included in future programmes.

She said: "We do have two excellent facilities in Benarty in the shape of Lochore Meadows Country Park and the Fife Cycle Track, and these are well used during the holiday programme for the area, but it is always good for the youngsters to get the chance to go trips and that could be something that should be looked at for the future."

Councillor Erskine agreed and added: "I would certainly say that there could be one or two more activities outwith the Benarty area which might be included in future programmes."
