CARDENDEN and Kinglassie MP, Peter Grant, is calling on everyone – businesses and individuals – to support Fairtrade and ensure that everyone receives a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight’s focus is on the people – in particular women – who work on cocoa farms and grow the main ingredient for the chocolate that we all love so much.

Through this campaign, it has been highlighted that most cocoa farmers in West Africa are being paid less than half what they need to live on and are living in poverty.

Marking the beginning of this awareness fortnight, Peter Grant, MP for Glenrothes and Central Fife said: “Everyone deserves to be able to live a stable and dignified life, with access to clean water, food, and medical care.

"The Fair Trade movement helps to highlight the fact that many of the commodities we take for granted are produced on the backs of people who live in poverty.

"Buying Fair trade alternatives will sometimes cost a wee bit more but it means we can be sure our money is going to the people who have earned it. This is not about charity, it’s about giving fair pay and fair working conditions to people who have as much right to them as we do.”
