A KELTY teen has become one of the youngest HGV drivers in the country.

Brendan Lawrie, 19, started his career with Cowdenbeath firm, AMC Removals, when he was just 16 as a porter but he's quickly made his way through the ranks.

He recently passed his Class two HGV licence test and he is now responsible for driving one of the biggest vehicles on the road.

It seems that driving lorries is in the veins as the former Beath High pupil explained: "My grandad was an HGV driver for 40 years, so he was very proud when I passed!

"When I first left school I started training as a mechanic, but it wasn't for me and I got a job at AMC.

"I started as a porter - a passenger in the lorry but as soon as I turned 18 they told me they would put me through my HGV training.

"It takes a few months of preparation, but you are put on an intensive course for a week and then you do your test at the end, which I passed with flying colours thankfully!

"When I first got in the lorry, yeah I was nervous! But after five minutes they seem to disappear.

"When I passed they told me I was one of the youngest drivers in the country, so it was a really proud moment for me."

AMC Removals is a 30-year-old business based in Glenfield Industrial Estate. They currently have 16 people in the work force but are taking on another five in the next few months.

They are the official approved removal company for Fife and Clackmannanshire Councils and the Royal Marines Band.

They also have plans to double the size of their warehouse this year.

Owner of AMC Removals Alex Cruickshank said: "Young Brendan is hard working and dedicated, and we're absolutely delighted that we've been able to give him a promotion.

"It's great news for the company. It is a big responsibility, he'll be driving goods worth about £200,000, but we have a lot of confidence in him.

“We've got high standards and like to take on youngsters straight from school and put them through our training programme.

"They're very keen and enthusiastic.

"I think Fife is a great place to do business and live in."
