CARDENDEN and Kinglassie MP Peter Grant was unhappy that his repeated request for information on what benefit the ending of the freedom of movement through Brexit would bring to his constituents.

On the 6th day of the Brexit debate on Friday, in the House of Commons, Glenrothes and Central Fife MP Peter Grant led for the SNP.

During this heated debate, Mr Grant put pressure on Conservative MPs to explain to his constituents of Glenrothes and Central Fife one benefit ending the freedom of movement will bring to them.

After being given multiple opportunities to intervene, no Conservative MP–including the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid MP–was able to give one assurance or benefit that the local community will experience through the end of freedom of movement.

Speaking during and after the debate, Peter Grant said: “On 19th December, at the final PMQs of last year, I asked the Prime Minister to give me one single, tangible benefit that my constituents would see that would compensate them for the social and economic damage that ending free movement of people we know will cause. She couldn’t give a single example.

“During today’s debate, I then gave the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid MP the opportunity to list any of the benefits, as well as any other Conservative MPs who wished to intervene, but no one took the opportunity to do so. "This shows me that there are no benefits, and that my constituency, and all other constituencies across Scotland, are only going to be negatively affected by this damaging, inward looking decision. A decision that they did not vote for."

He added: “The only way to stop this regressive and divisive path we are on, is to allow Parliament, and the people, a meaningful vote between Brexit and no Brexit. Not a meaningless vote of Theresa May’s deal or no deal.”
